Billy Lynn (Joe Alwyn), a soldier 19 years old from Texas, is caught on camera when they pull sergeant wounded Virgil “Shroom” Breem (Vin Diesel) to lead it in a safe place after an intense battle. This act of bravery attract attention on himself and his unit from the media and become a true national hero, starting a national tour. The unit is taken with a limo to the stadium with the PR team Dallas Cowboys and film producer Albert Brown.
Then, images from the past shows how Billy enlisted in the Army after he destroyed car lover his elder sister, Kathryn (Kristen Stewart) because he left it when, due to an accident, she had to suffer more facial reconstruction operations. Turning now to the stadium, Billy maintains a news conference during which observes a cheerleader named Faison (Makenzie Leigh) smiling. After the conference, Faison approaches him and starts a conversation with him.

Apparently, Billy and his unit must return to the front, but he is called by the doctor that Kathryn spoke to try to do so to pass it retired honorably and not return to Iraq .
