A medical student named Courtney (Ellen Page) is obsessed with the idea of a later life, and she really wishes to know what will happen after death. She invites two faculty colleagues named Jamie (James Norton) and Sophia (Kiersey Clemons) to join him in an experiment he wants to make in an unused hospital room; the experiment would consist of using the defibrillator to stop the heart for one minute, and during this time the two to regain his brain activity and then to bring it back to life.
She assures the two of them that they will not be held accountable no matter if an accident occurs. Sophia does not agree with this, but Jamie is also deciding to actively participate. After 60 seconds, Jamie and Sophia panicked because they were not able to return to life, but eventually they are helped by Ray (Diego Luna) and wake her up. Later, Marlo (Nina Dobrev) arrives and learns about the experiment.
Initially, Courtney begins to remember things from the distant past, like her grandmother’s recipe for bread, but soon she is experiencing a greater euphoria and intelligence, being able to sing the piano and respond to the perfection of some questions from the courses. Envious, Jamie is also trying, but he has an extrasensory experience. Courtney and Jamie start to have some visions, but I’m not telling the others about them. Marlo and Sophia are also subject to the experiment and share positive results similar to those of Courtney, but soon everything turns into a nightmare for everyone.
