By 2020, most of the human population has been destroyed by blind creatures, but with an overly intense sense of hearing that they use to hunt their prey with incredible accuracy. The Abbott family – Lee’s husband, wife Evelyn, sons Marcus and Beau, and deaf daughter Regan – strive to find supplies to survive and communicate only through signs. A year later, after a tragic event, the family lives on their farm, and Evelyn is in the final stage of pregnancy.

Lee is repairing Regan’s hearing aid, but the device can not render his face. Regan feels guilty of the dramatic incident they had a year ago and asks her father not to try to get her back. Lee explains to Marcus that they will be safe for these creatures as long as loud noises conceal what they produce during the movement.

Meanwhile, Evelyn goes into labor and in the agony produced, she accidentally shoots a picture that breaks and alerts one of the nearby creatures. It alerts the rest of the family of danger by means of a switch that changes the light from red to white and tries to stay silent during contractions. Arriving at the farm and seeing the lights, Lee instructs Marcus to create a diversion as he goes to see what happens to Evelyn.
