In 2045, largely the big cities became real slums because of overpopulation, pollution and climate change. In order to escape from this desolation, people escape into virtual reality, especially in the world created by OASIS, a company that created a virtual reality where people can engage in many service, education or entertainment activities. Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) is a teenager in Columbus, Ohio who visits OASIS and tries to win the “Anorak’s Game”, a game conceived by the recently deceased OASIS founder James Halliday (Mark Rylance).

James concealed a secret message inside his game and conceived a competition whose prize consisted in taking over the company in full and the $ 500 billion fortune. The winner will have to find that message well hidden by James, and Wade is determined to be the one who puts his hands on the colossal fortune. Of course, at such a prize, the competition is extremely fierce, and while Wade is working with a few of his friends, the IOI giant corporation employs more players to try and find the first treasure and take control of OASIS. They will resort to any trick that they can do to achieve their purpose, starting with the game itself and coming to life.
